Laser safety training through myLearning
Before working with lasers at JHU, you must be trained in laser hazards and how to control them. There are three different kinds of laser operator.
[NOTE: you will need your JHEID and password to take the course]
Key to acronyms
- ALO: Authorized laser operator
- LO: Laser observer
- LU: Laser user
- NHZ: Nominal hazard zone

Laser Users / Observers
A laser user works with Class 1 laser systems.
A laser observer enters an experiment’s NHZ only to observe under the direct supervision of a qualified person. (LOs are typically learning to become ALOs–see right.)
There is a single qualification course for both positions. Click here- The Safe Use of Lasers in the Laboratory – to sign in to JHU’s myLearning site.

Authorized Laser Operators
Authorized laser operators work inside the NHZ of an experiment and operate laser systems which are classified as Class 3B or Class 4. The ALO safety training training consists of three course modules:
- The Physics of Lasers and Laser Light
- Beam and Non-Beam Hazards
- Laser System Controls and Operational Practices.

New Requirement for Laser Cutter Users
- All Laser Cutter users must take additional laser cutter safety before using laser cutters in University labs. This training is also through myLearning.
