In case of biological spill

Do this immediately

  1. For large or highly pathogenic spills
    1. EVACUATE the area
    2. CONTACT Security [(410)516-7777] using your cell phone or an emergency blue-light phone
  2. For a small spill
    1. ABSORB material with suitable absorbent
    2. DISPOSE of used absorbent in biohazard box (autoclave if necessary)
    3. DISINFECT contaminated area with bleach (do not use ethanol over large areas or near ignition sources)
    4. ALLOW DISINFECTANT TO WORK be for required kill time
    5. ABSORB disinfectant with suitable absorbent
    6. DISPOSE of used absorbent in biohazard box (autoclave if necessary)
    7. REPACK any leaking biohazard boxes or bags and disinfect underneath them

Do this when the situation is stabilized

  1. CONTACT your lab manager and PI
  2. CALL Health, Safety, and Environment [(410)516-8798] to report the spill
  3. WRITE DOWN everything you remember about the incident
